GM to Deploy Google Gemini AI Across Four Million US Vehicles
DETROIT — General Motors announced plans to deploy Google’s Gemini AI assistant to approximately four million U.S. vehicles, covering 2022 and newer Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick, and GMC models equipped with Google built-in infotainment systems, according to The Verge.
GM plans to deliver the AI upgrade through over-the-air software updates over the course of several months, meaning existing owners will not need to visit a dealership to receive the update.
The deployment extends Google’s Gemini AI beyond smartphones and computers into the automotive cabin, where drivers and passengers interact with voice assistants and navigation systems daily. The integration deepens an existing partnership with Google, which already powers the automaker’s in-vehicle infotainment experience through its Google built-in platform.
GM has offered basic voice assistants in its vehicles for years. The Gemini integration adds large language model capabilities to the infotainment system, enabling more conversational AI interactions for drivers and passengers.
Other automakers including Mercedes-Benz and BMW have announced AI assistant partnerships of their own. Details on the specific capabilities Gemini will bring to GM’s infotainment system were not immediately available from initial reports.
Google has been expanding Gemini’s reach across its product ecosystem, including Android devices and Pixel hardware. Whether Gemini features in GM vehicles will require a subscription or be included at no additional cost was not disclosed.
