Cloudflare Cuts 1,100 Jobs, Cites AI Efficiency Gains

SAN FRANCISCO — Cloudflare Inc. announced Thursday it would eliminate approximately 1,100 positions, with Chief Executive Matthew Prince attributing the cuts to artificial intelligence-driven efficiency gains, according to TechCrunch.

Prince said AI automation had rendered many of the company’s support roles unnecessary, TechCrunch reported. The layoffs came as the internet infrastructure company reported record revenue.

The cuts affect the publicly traded company (NYSE: NET) and come during a period of financial strength rather than distress.

Cloudflare framed the reductions as a consequence of AI productivity rather than business underperformance. The company joins others in the technology sector that have cited AI capabilities as a factor in headcount decisions, according to TechCrunch.

The positions eliminated were concentrated in support functions, TechCrunch reported, with customer service and operational roles reduced as AI automation expands in those areas.

The announcement has drawn attention to ongoing policy debate over AI’s impact on the American workforce. Lawmakers have proposed measures including AI displacement disclosure requirements and retraining funding, though no comprehensive federal legislation has advanced.

Cloudflare, founded in 2009, provides content delivery, cybersecurity, and cloud networking services to millions of websites and applications worldwide. The company went public in 2019 and has reported consistent revenue growth in the cloud infrastructure sector.
