ArXiv to Ban Authors Using AI Exclusively in Papers
ArXiv, the leading open-access research repository, announced May 16 it will impose a one-year ban on authors who submit scientific papers generated entirely by artificial intelligence. The policy, detailed in a report, requires researchers to demonstrate meaningful human contribution in all submissions or face suspension.
The repository, which hosts over 2 million scientific papers annually, cited growing concerns about the ‘careless use’ of large language models in academic work. Authors found to have used AI tools without substantial human oversight will be prohibited from submitting new work for 12 months. ArXiv officials emphasized the rule applies only to papers where AI generated the entire manuscript, not those using AI for data analysis or drafting assistance.
As a US-based platform critical to academic research, the policy impacts scientists at American universities and institutions. Critics argue the ban may stifle AI-assisted innovation, while supporters call it necessary to maintain scientific rigor.
