Ghanaian AI Tool Enhances Legal Education for Students
Researchers in Ghana have developed Eskwai for Students, a generative AI assistant designed to support legal education using a retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) system. According to a study published on arXiv, the tool draws from 12,000 case laws and 1,400 legislative documents to assist law students. A 30-month trial involving 3,100 students demonstrated its practical utility while highlighting ethical challenges in AI deployment for education.
The system, detailed in the preprint paper arXiv:2605.15380v1, addresses a gap in AI applications for legal education in the Global South. The RAG architecture retrieves relevant legal precedents and statutes before generating responses, ensuring contextually accurate answers to complex legal questions. The study notes both improved student engagement and concerns about over-reliance on AI tools.
Developers emphasize the tool’s potential to democratize access to legal knowledge in Ghana, though they caution that ethical frameworks must evolve alongside the technology. The research contributes to growing discussions about AI’s role in education systems beyond the United States and Europe.
