Colorado Updates AI Law to Target Consumer Financial Services
Colorado lawmakers have revised the state’s artificial intelligence statute to impose new requirements on AI systems used in consumer financial services, according to a report by ‘Colorado Rewrites Its AI Law.’
The updated law, which takes effect later this year, mandates that firms deploying AI for credit underwriting, fraud detection, and personalized financial advice conduct impact assessments and maintain transparency about algorithmic decision-making.
State officials said the changes aim to protect consumers from biased or opaque AI outcomes while fostering innovation within a clear regulatory framework.
Industry groups warned that the additional compliance burden could increase costs for fintech companies operating in Colorado, but noted that the state’s approach may serve as a model for other jurisdictions considering AI oversight.
The revision reflects a broader trend of state-level AI legislation emerging as federal lawmakers continue to debate comprehensive AI policy.
The report will continue to track implementation and any legal challenges.
