Amazon Gains Access to OpenAI Models, Ending Microsoft Exclusivity
Amazon Web Services has secured access to OpenAI’s commercial models, ending Microsoft Azure’s exclusive hold on distributing the AI lab’s technology, according to PYMNTS.com.
The deal positions AWS as a direct alternative to Microsoft Azure for enterprises seeking to deploy OpenAI’s models, marking a shift in the competitive dynamics of the cloud AI infrastructure market. Microsoft had previously maintained exclusive commercial distribution rights to OpenAI’s models through its multibillion-dollar investment in the San Francisco-based AI company.
The development comes as the three largest U.S. cloud providers — Amazon, Microsoft and Google — compete for enterprise AI workloads, a market segment that has driven much of the growth in cloud computing revenue over the past two years.
For Amazon, the arrangement fills a gap in its AI model offerings on AWS Bedrock, its managed AI service that already provides access to models from Anthropic, Meta, Mistral and other providers. OpenAI’s GPT series remains among the most widely adopted foundation models in enterprise settings.
Microsoft, which has invested more than $13 billion in OpenAI and built its Azure OpenAI Service into a cornerstone of its cloud AI strategy, now faces the prospect of competing on infrastructure and pricing rather than exclusive model access.
The move also reflects OpenAI’s own strategic evolution. The company has increasingly sought to expand its distribution channels beyond a single cloud partner, a shift that gives it greater leverage and broader market reach as it scales its commercial operations.
For U.S. enterprises evaluating cloud AI strategies, the deal introduces new optionality. Organizations already invested in AWS infrastructure can now access OpenAI models without migrating workloads to Azure, potentially reducing complexity and cost for multi-cloud deployments.
The cloud AI market has become a central competitive arena for the largest technology companies, with enterprise spending on AI infrastructure and model access accelerating over the past two years.
