In AI insurance, buyers are dealing with two different kinds of company

Some AI insurance vendors write and hold the risk. Others place it with someone else. The distinction is not always obvious from the marketing.

Businesses shopping for AI liability coverage are encountering two structurally different types of vendor, and the difference is not always clear from the product pages themselves, according to AI Dispatch's review of four AI insurance sites.

Vouch identifies itself as an intermediary: "Vouch | Business Insurance Broker & Risk Advisor to Growing Companies," its site states, elsewhere calling itself "the insurance broker for leaders building what's next." A broker arranges coverage on a client's behalf and places it with an underwriter; the broker itself does not carry the risk. Vouch's site does not state which underwriters it places AI-specific coverage with, or whether it does so at all.

The other three vendors indexed describe themselves in terms closer to a product than an intermediary. Armilla AI says it is "purpose-built AI insurance for generative AI and AI agents" and that it "provides named, affirmative AI insurance that responds to those failure modes directly" — language describing a coverage product, not a placement service. Munich Re markets aiSure as "a comprehensive suite of coverage for AI systems." Coalition describes "cyber coverage backed by proprietary intelligence and Allianz's A+ rated capacity," naming Allianz as the capacity behind its policies — the clearest statement of underlying risk-bearing among the four sites reviewed.

The distinction matters for the indemnity question buyers ultimately care about: if a claim is denied, a broker's client generally has recourse against the underwriter that wrote the policy, not the broker that placed it. None of the four sites reviewed by AI Dispatch names an underwriting capacity provider with the specificity Coalition does for its core cyber product, and none publishes claims-payment or indemnity terms specific to AI-related coverage. AI Dispatch's index tracks this distinction as part of its insurance and indemnity trust-gap dimension, published with sourcing at aidispatch.news.
