Mistral Unveils Medium 3.5, Merging Chat, Code and Reasoning

PARIS — French artificial intelligence company Mistral on Thursday released its new flagship model, Mistral Medium 3.5, combining what were previously separate systems for chat, reasoning and code into a single unified product.

The launch aims to simplify Mistral’s model lineup as it competes with leading U.S. AI labs including OpenAI, Anthropic and Google DeepMind, all of which offer premium models spanning multiple capability domains.

Medium 3.5 consolidates functions that Mistral had previously distributed across specialized models, according to a report by The Decoder. Rather than requiring developers and enterprise customers to select different models for different tasks, the new flagship handles conversational AI, complex reasoning and code generation within a single system.

Alongside the model release, Mistral announced two additions to its product ecosystem: asynchronous cloud agents for its Vibe coding tool and a new agent mode for Le Chat, the company’s consumer-facing AI assistant.

The agent features reflect an industry-wide push toward agentic AI — systems that can autonomously execute multi-step tasks rather than simply responding to single prompts.

Mistral, founded in 2023 by former Google DeepMind and Meta researchers, has positioned itself as Europe’s leading AI lab. The company has raised more than $1 billion in venture funding and serves enterprise customers globally, including in the United States.
