Google to Unveil New AI Models at I/O 2025

Mountain View, Calif. — Google will present new foundation models at its I/O 2025 developer conference May 18, but faces stiff competition from OpenAI and Anthropic, according to a report from MIT Tech Review AI.

The annual event marks Google’s latest effort to catch up in the race for advanced AI models, a year after its I/O 2024 presentation. While the tech giant will showcase “new and improved” foundation models, the report notes it remains “a clear third place” behind OpenAI’s GPT-5 and Anthropic’s Claude 3.5 in capabilities and market traction.

Foundation models — AI systems trained on vast datasets and adaptable to multiple tasks — have become the industry’s most valuable assets. Google’s updates will focus on multimodal capabilities and enterprise applications, as reported by MIT Tech Review AI.

The conference begins Monday and will include demonstrations of Google’s AI strategies across consumer and business markets. Analysts say the presentations will be closely watched for hints about the company’s timeline for achieving “transformer-free” models, a next-generation approach being explored by competitors.
