AI WhatsApp Bot Adesua Aims to Boost Science Education in West Africa

A new AI-powered WhatsApp bot called Adesua has been developed to address science education challenges in West Africa, where teacher shortages and high student-teacher ratios limit personalized learning opportunities. The system, detailed in a study published on arXiv (cs.CL), leverages WhatsApp’s widespread adoption to deliver automated science instruction and assessments aligned with regional curricula.

“Sub-Saharan Africa faces persistently high student-teacher ratios and shortages of qualified teachers, limiting students’ access to personalized learning support and formative assessment,” the research abstract states. Adesua builds upon the Kwame for Science platform, extending its capabilities through conversational AI to provide 24/7 science education support via mobile devices.

The development team, led by researchers in educational technology, designed the bot to handle common science topics while adapting to user responses. Early feasibility tests suggest the system could help bridge educational gaps in regions with limited access to qualified STEM instructors. The solution avoids requiring internet connectivity beyond basic WhatsApp functionality, making it accessible in low-bandwidth environments.

This initiative aligns with global efforts to use AI for educational equity, though implementation challenges remain in ensuring cultural relevance of scientific content and maintaining user engagement through conversational interfaces.
