Amazon Replaces Rufus With Alexa-Powered Shopping Assistant

SEATTLE — Amazon on Tuesday launched a new artificial intelligence shopping assistant called “Alexa for Shopping,” embedding the tool directly into the e-commerce giant’s search bar and replacing its previous AI assistant, Rufus.

The new assistant is powered by Alexa+, Amazon’s upgraded AI platform, and is designed to deliver personalized shopping recommendations to customers browsing the retailer’s marketplace, according to a report by TechCrunch.

The launch retires the Rufus assistant, which Amazon had introduced as its first generative AI shopping tool. Alexa for Shopping integrates Amazon’s broader Alexa AI ecosystem into its core retail business.

Competitive Landscape

The launch comes as major technology companies race to embed AI assistants into commercial platforms. Google has been expanding AI capabilities within Google Shopping, while startups and established retailers alike have experimented with conversational commerce tools.

Amazon’s decision to unify its shopping AI under the Alexa brand signals the company’s intent to build a single AI identity across its consumer products, from smart speakers to the shopping cart.

Amazon has not disclosed specific details about pricing changes or whether Alexa for Shopping features will be available to all customers or limited to Prime or Alexa+ subscribers.
