Jury Dismisses Musk’s $150B OpenAI Lawsuit
A U.S. jury on Thursday dismissed Elon Musk’s $150 billion lawsuit against OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman in a California federal court. The case, which alleged breach of contract and fiduciary duties, was one of the largest corporate disputes in AI history.
The lawsuit, filed in 2023, accused OpenAI of violating a 2016 research agreement and failing to adhere to its original nonprofit mission. Musk, who co-founded OpenAI in 2015, claimed the organization had become ‘hostile’ to his interests after his $44 billion acquisition of Twitter (now X).
The jury’s decision follows a three-week trial that examined internal communications and corporate governance practices at OpenAI. The ruling could have implications for AI regulation and corporate governance frameworks in the United States.
OpenAI and Altman released a joint statement calling the verdict ‘a validation of our commitment to responsible AI development.’ Musk has not publicly commented on the ruling.
