Colorado Amends AI Law, Easing Employer Obligations

Colorado has amended its artificial intelligence law to reduce obligations for employers using AI in hiring and workplace decisions, according to a recent update from law firm Littler Mendelson P.C.

The revised legislation, which took effect following state legislative action, removes or scales back requirements for employer transparency, bias assessments, and employee notifications previously mandated under the original law. The changes aim to ease compliance burdens for businesses while maintaining core safeguards against discriminatory AI practices.

The amendment impacts employers across Colorado’s technology, healthcare, and retail sectors. Industry analysts note the shift could influence AI regulation strategies in other U.S. states balancing innovation incentives with worker protections.

The original 2021 law had positioned Colorado as a leader in AI workplace regulation, requiring employers to conduct bias audits and disclose AI usage to applicants. The updated framework retains prohibitions on discriminatory algorithms but streamlines implementation timelines and documentation requirements.
