OpenAI Launches Cybersecurity-Focused AI Model

SAN FRANCISCO — OpenAI released an artificial intelligence model designed for cybersecurity teams Wednesday, the company announced, approximately one month after Anthropic debuted its Mythos model targeting the same market.

The launch follows Anthropic’s April release of Mythos, which also targets the cybersecurity vertical, according to CNBC. The sequential releases reflect growing focus among leading AI labs on purpose-built models for security operations.

The model is aimed at cybersecurity professionals and security operations teams, CNBC reported, joining a field of AI tools designed to help organizations detect, analyze and respond to cyber threats.

OpenAI is expanding into vertical-specific AI products, moving beyond its general-purpose ChatGPT and GPT model offerings. Enterprise cybersecurity has attracted AI developer interest as organizations face an expanding threat landscape and a persistent shortage of skilled security analysts.

Anthropic’s Mythos, released in early April, marked that company’s first dedicated cybersecurity model, signaling a broader industry trend toward specialized AI systems tailored for security use cases.

The cybersecurity AI market has attracted investment from both AI labs and traditional security vendors. Companies such as Microsoft, Google and CrowdStrike have integrated AI capabilities into their security platforms, while startups focused on AI-driven threat detection continue to attract venture capital.

For U.S. enterprises, government contractors and defense organizations, purpose-built security AI models from major American AI labs provide additional tools to counter cyber threats from nation-state actors.
