OpenAI Begins Testing Ads in ChatGPT

SAN FRANCISCO — OpenAI announced Wednesday it has begun testing advertisements in ChatGPT, introducing clearly labeled ads while keeping commercial content separate from the AI assistant’s responses, the company said.

The test, detailed in a blog post on OpenAI’s website, includes several user protections: clear labeling to distinguish sponsored content from AI-generated answers, privacy safeguards for user data, and controls that allow users to manage their ad experience. The company emphasized that advertising content will not influence ChatGPT’s answers, maintaining a firewall between commercial messages and the AI assistant’s outputs.

The move positions OpenAI alongside Google, Meta and other technology giants that rely on advertising revenue, though the company framed the initiative as a way to keep ChatGPT accessible to users who do not pay for premium subscriptions. ChatGPT has more than 100 million weekly active users, with the majority on the free tier, according to OpenAI.

The ad test comes as OpenAI faces costs associated with operating large-scale AI infrastructure. The company has raised billions in venture capital and recently restructured from a nonprofit to a for-profit entity, moves that have increased pressure to develop sustainable revenue streams beyond subscriptions.

For the U.S. market, where ChatGPT holds a leading position among consumer AI products, the introduction of advertising creates new competitive dynamics. Google has already integrated AI-generated responses into its search results alongside its established advertising business, while Microsoft has woven AI features into Bing with ad placements. OpenAI’s entry into AI advertising puts it in direct competition with these incumbents on their home turf.

The test phase will allow OpenAI to evaluate user response and refine the ad experience before any broader rollout, though the company did not provide a specific timeline for expanding the program.

Privacy advocates and industry observers will be watching closely to see how OpenAI balances advertising incentives with the trust users place in an AI assistant that handles sensitive queries across health, finance, education and personal matters.
