OpenAI Releases GPT-5.5, Calls It Company’s ‘Smartest Model Yet’

OpenAI on Thursday released GPT-5.5, which the San Francisco-based company described as its “smartest model yet,” offering faster performance and expanded capabilities across complex tasks including coding, research, and data analysis.

The company said the new model is “faster, more capable, and built for complex tasks” that span multiple tools, according to a blog post published on OpenAI’s website. GPT-5.5 represents the latest step in OpenAI’s effort to build increasingly powerful general-purpose AI systems.

The release positions GPT-5.5 as an upgrade over GPT-5, which OpenAI launched in 2025. The company highlighted the model’s ability to handle multi-step workflows across different tools, suggesting deeper integration with its product ecosystem.

OpenAI did not immediately provide detailed benchmark comparisons or pricing information in its initial announcement. The company has historically rolled out new models first to paying subscribers before expanding access.

The announcement comes as competition among leading AI providers intensifies. Anthropic, Google DeepMind, Meta, and other labs have released or previewed competing frontier models in recent months, each claiming advances in reasoning, coding, and agentic capabilities.

OpenAI, founded in 2015 and backed by Microsoft Corp., operates ChatGPT and a suite of AI developer tools. The company has been at the center of the generative AI boom and is among the most highly valued private technology companies in the world.
