Google Integrates AI Mode Directly Into Chrome Browser

Google announced Thursday it is bringing AI Mode directly into the Chrome browser, allowing users to explore the web through AI-powered search and navigation without leaving their browsing experience.

The feature, detailed on the Google AI Blog, represents a significant expansion of the company’s artificial intelligence strategy beyond its search engine and into its core browser product, which commands roughly 65 percent of the global desktop browser market.

AI Mode in Chrome enables users to ask questions, synthesize information across multiple web pages and receive AI-generated responses while browsing. The integration builds on Google’s existing AI Overviews feature in Search but embeds the capability at the browser level, making it accessible regardless of which website a user is visiting.

The move positions Google to compete more directly with AI-native browsing tools and assistants that have gained traction over the past year. Microsoft has similarly integrated its Copilot AI assistant into the Edge browser, while startups such as Arc and Opera have built AI features into their browsers.

For Google, the Chrome integration serves a dual purpose: it keeps users within the company’s ecosystem while generating additional data signals that can improve its AI models. Chrome’s installed base of more than 3 billion users across desktop and mobile gives the feature immediate scale that standalone AI products struggle to match.

The announcement comes as Google faces increasing regulatory scrutiny over its browser dominance. A federal judge ruled last year that Google maintained an illegal monopoly in search, and the company’s bundling of AI features into Chrome could draw additional attention from antitrust regulators in both the United States and the European Union.

Google did not immediately disclose a timeline for the broader rollout of AI Mode in Chrome or specify which AI models power the feature. The company has been progressively integrating its Gemini family of models across its product suite throughout 2025 and 2026.

Chrome users can expect the feature to roll out in stages, consistent with Google’s typical approach to major product updates.
