Disk-cleanup app Bytesweep markets Apple's notarization as a trust badge; it is not a security certification
Bytesweep, a one-time-purchase disk cleaner for Mac and Windows, keeps all data on-device and runs no server to send it to, according to its site. The "Notarised by Apple" badge it displays alongside pricing checks software for malware; it is not a security or compliance certification, and the site discloses no audit trail or insurance.
Bytesweep, a disk-cleanup app for Mac and Windows sold as a one-time $29.99 purchase per computer, keeps user data entirely on-device, according to its website. "There is no Bytesweep server for it to send anything to. File names, sizes and history stay in a database on your own disk," the site says.
Displayed next to its pricing and download links, Bytesweep's site carries the label "Notarised by Apple Checked by Apple for malicious software." Apple notarization is an automated malware scan Apple runs on software distributed outside the Mac App Store — not a security audit or a compliance certification such as SOC 2 or ISO 27001. Bytesweep's site does not claim otherwise, but places the label where a certification badge would typically appear, next to the price.
The company offers email support and a 14-day, no-questions-asked refund.
A full-text search of Bytesweep's homepage, a 14,305-character capture retrieved Oct. 6, found no mention of insurance, indemnification, warranty, liability, an audit trail, or any compliance certification beyond the Apple notarization notice.
For a tool that only touches a user's own disk, the stakes of that gap are low. The pattern is worth tracking because the same badge — an OS-level malware check marketed beside a price tag — recurs on AI tools whose actions reach further than a local file system.
