OpenAI Offers Codex to 8,000 Developers After GPT-5.5 Event Sells Out

SAN FRANCISCO — OpenAI is extending free access to its Codex AI coding tool to 8,000 developers in a monthlong giveaway following a sold-out GPT-5.5 launch event, according to VentureBeat.

The promotion, announced in early May, transforms what was initially a capacity-limited celebration of the company’s latest large language model into an extended program aimed at growing Codex’s developer base.

Codex, OpenAI’s AI-powered coding assistant, competes directly with Microsoft’s GitHub Copilot, Amazon’s CodeWhisperer, and a growing field of AI coding tools from startups and established players alike. The extended access program is designed to let developers experience the tool firsthand.

The sold-out GPT-5.5 event demonstrated demand for OpenAI’s latest model capabilities. Rather than limiting the promotional opportunity to in-person attendees, the company chose to scale developer engagement online.

The giveaway comes as competition in the AI coding tools market intensifies, with multiple companies vying for developer adoption.

OpenAI has not disclosed the specific terms of the Codex access being offered or whether participants will receive access to GPT-5.5-powered features within the coding tool.
