Amazon Rolls Out Claude Code, Codex to Employees

SEATTLE — Amazon is rolling out Anthropic’s Claude Code and OpenAI’s Codex to its employees, following sustained internal demand for AI-powered coding assistants, according to a report from Business Insider.

Business Insider described the deployment as one of the largest known enterprise adoptions of agentic coding tools, with products from two leading U.S. AI labs deployed simultaneously. Amazon employees had pushed for access to Claude Code, Anthropic’s command-line coding agent, and are now receiving it alongside OpenAI’s Codex, the report said.

At Amazon, which employs hundreds of thousands of corporate and technical workers, the deployment gives both Anthropic and OpenAI a presence inside one of the world’s largest technology employers as they compete for enterprise market share.

Amazon has a deep financial relationship with Anthropic, having invested up to $4 billion in the AI startup. Despite that partnership, the company’s decision to also deploy OpenAI’s Codex suggests Amazon is taking a multi-vendor approach to AI coding tools rather than exclusively backing its investment partner.

Claude Code, launched by Anthropic, operates as an agentic coding assistant that can autonomously navigate codebases, write and edit files, and execute terminal commands. OpenAI’s Codex offers similar capabilities as a cloud-based software engineering agent. Both tools are part of the emerging category of agentic AI — systems that can take independent action rather than simply responding to prompts.

GitHub’s Copilot, powered by OpenAI technology, has already seen widespread enterprise uptake. The addition of more autonomous agents like Claude Code and Codex marks a continued expansion of AI-assisted software development tools in enterprise settings.
