Google DeepMind Opens Project Genie to US Subscribers
Google DeepMind on Wednesday launched Project Genie, an experimental research prototype that allows users to create and explore AI-generated interactive worlds, making it available exclusively to Google AI Ultra subscribers in the United States.
The tool represents one of the first instances of a major AI lab turning generative world model research into a consumer-facing product, according to a blog post from Google DeepMind. Project Genie enables users to generate and navigate through interactive environments created entirely by artificial intelligence.
The US-exclusive rollout comes as leading AI companies move beyond text and image generation into interactive, real-time media. OpenAI, Meta and other US-based labs have pursued similar research into world models and interactive AI-generated content, though few have offered public access to such systems.
Project Genie is available through Google’s AI Ultra subscription tier, the company’s premium offering that bundles access to its most advanced AI capabilities.
DeepMind characterized the release as experimental, emphasizing that Project Genie remains a research prototype rather than a fully developed product. The distinction suggests the company is seeking real-world user feedback to inform future development of generative world model technology.
The launch represents a step toward commercializing generative world model research for DeepMind, which has historically focused on publishing foundational research before releasing consumer-facing products. The release comes as competition intensifies among AI labs to demonstrate practical applications of their research.
Interactive world generation sits at the intersection of several AI research areas, including video generation, physics simulation and real-time rendering. The technology could have applications in gaming, simulation, education and training if developed beyond the prototype stage.
