arXiv Enhances HTML Papers with MathML 4 Accessibility Features
arXiv, the US-based academic preprint repository, announced technical advancements to its HTML Papers project in 2025 and 2026, including enhanced MathML 4 accessibility features and cost-reduction measures. The updates, detailed in a research paper published on arXiv (arXiv:2605.16562v1), focus on improving accessibility for mathematical content while scaling conversion processes across its 6,000+ daily LaTeX submissions.
Key developments include resolution of approximately half of user-reported issues since the 2023 launch, progress toward 90% error-free HTML conversion (currently at 75%), and implementation of MathML 4 Intent annotations to better support screen readers and assistive technologies. The project also transitioned to a Rust-based LaTeXML port, reducing computational costs while maintaining conversion quality.
The upgrades align with US STEM education accessibility standards and could benefit researchers with visual impairments or those using mobile devices. arXiv’s HTML Papers initiative, now available on all new TeX/LaTeX submissions, aims to make mathematical research more accessible without compromising typesetting precision.
