BBB Warns Shoppers to Verify AI Search Results

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) has warned online shoppers to verify the legitimacy of companies found through AI-powered search tools, as reported, amid concerns AI results may contain inaccurate or fabricated information leading to scams. The advisory highlights risks of unreliable results as AI becomes more prevalent in e-commerce.

“AI tools can produce misleading or incomplete data, especially for newer or lesser-known businesses,” a BBB spokesperson stated. The agency recommends cross-checking company details using official websites, verified reviews, and BBB business profiles before making purchases or sharing personal information.

The advisory reflects broader challenges as AI search tools become more prevalent in e-commerce. While these tools aim to streamline shopping experiences, their reliance on training data introduces risks of outdated or incorrect information. The BBB emphasized that consumers should treat AI-generated results with the same scrutiny as any unsolicited business recommendation.

This comes as the BBB, a U.S.-based consumer protection organization, reports a surge in inquiries about online shopping scams. With holiday shopping season approaching, the agency is prioritizing education on digital safety practices for AI-era commerce.
