Malta, OpenAI, Microsoft Sign First Global AI Literacy Pact
VALLETTA, Malta — Malta has signed a first-of-its-kind agreement with U.S.-based OpenAI and Microsoft to advance national AI literacy through education and workforce development initiatives, according to the Times of Malta.
The partnership aims to integrate AI education into Malta’s national curriculum while upskilling workers in emerging technologies. The deal includes access to OpenAI’s tools and Microsoft’s Azure AI platform for Maltese students, educators, and businesses.
Malta’s Prime Minister Robert Abela called the agreement "a model for global AI governance," as reported by the Times of Malta. The initiative aligns with Malta’s 2023 National AI Strategy, which prioritizes ethical AI adoption and digital workforce readiness.
While OpenAI and Microsoft are U.S.-based, the agreement focuses on Malta’s domestic priorities with no direct U.S. market implications mentioned. The deal includes a three-year pilot program for AI literacy certifications, with potential expansion to other European Union nations.
