Sony Clarifies AI Camera Assistant Doesn’t Edit Photos
Sony is addressing confusion over its AI Camera Assistant feature on the Xperia 1 III smartphone, clarifying that the technology does not edit photos but instead suggests optimal camera settings based on scene analysis, according to a report from The Verge.
The feature, which drew criticism after a demonstration post sparked user concerns, analyzes lighting, depth, and subject matter when a user points the camera at a scene. It then offers four suggested camera configurations to improve the shot, Sony explained in a statement. The company emphasized that final photo adjustments remain entirely under user control.
“The AI Camera Assistant acts as a smart advisor rather than an automated editor,” said a Sony spokesperson. The clarification comes as smartphone manufacturers increasingly integrate AI into photography features, with the Xperia 1 III available in the U.S. market since 2023.
Industry analysts note that user education remains a challenge for AI features, with similar controversies arising over tools from Google and Samsung. Sony’s clarification highlights the distinction between AI-powered suggestions and automatic image manipulation in mobile photography.
