Mira Murati Advances Human-Centric AI at Thinking Machines Lab
Mira Murati, founder of the Thinking Machines Lab and former OpenAI CTO, is developing AI systems designed to collaborate with humans rather than replace them, according to a recent Wired profile. The US-based researcher emphasized her commitment to "keeping humans in the loop" as a core principle for her new lab’s AI development.
Murati, who led OpenAI’s engineering teams before departing in 2023, told Wired that her work at Thinking Machines Lab focuses on creating systems that augment human capabilities rather than automate jobs. This approach contrasts with industry trends toward fully autonomous AI solutions, positioning her lab as a proponent of collaborative intelligence.
The initiative aligns with growing US regulatory and ethical discussions around AI’s societal impact. Murati’s human-centric framework draws from her OpenAI experience, where she oversaw projects including the development of GPT-3 and GPT-4. However, she told Wired, "I’m not interested in building systems that automate people out of their jobs" — a stance reflecting concerns about AI’s economic displacement risks.
Thinking Machines Lab, based in the United States, has not yet released public demonstrations of its technology. Industry analysts note that Murati’s approach could influence federal AI policy debates, particularly as the Biden administration considers mandates for human oversight in critical AI applications.
