Anthropic Surpasses OpenAI in Business Customer Count, Ramp Data Shows

SAN FRANCISCO — Anthropic has surpassed OpenAI in verified business customer count for the first time, according to Ramp’s May AI Index, published Tuesday and based on real corporate purchasing data.

The data, based on real corporate purchasing behavior tracked by Ramp, shows Anthropic — the maker of the Claude family of AI models — now leads OpenAI in business customer count among companies using Ramp’s expense management platform, according to TechCrunch.

Ramp’s AI Index draws on anonymized spending data from the thousands of businesses that use its corporate card and finance software, providing a proxy for enterprise AI adoption trends that is grounded in actual procurement rather than self-reported surveys.

The milestone represents a reversal for OpenAI, which had maintained its position as the dominant provider of AI tools to businesses since the launch of ChatGPT in late 2022. Business Insider characterized the development as OpenAI losing its “enterprise AI crown” to Anthropic.

Both companies are headquartered in San Francisco and are competing aggressively for enterprise contracts. OpenAI, backed by Microsoft Corp., has pushed its GPT series of models and ChatGPT Enterprise product. Anthropic, which counts Amazon.com Inc. and Alphabet Inc. among its investors, has marketed its Claude models as emphasizing safety, reliability and strong performance on complex reasoning tasks.

The Ramp data offers an independent, spending-based measure of market share at a time when both companies have been announcing large funding rounds and expanding their enterprise sales teams. OpenAI closed a $40 billion funding round in recent months, while Anthropic has raised billions from strategic partners.

The Ramp index tracks customer count rather than total spending, meaning OpenAI could still lead in overall enterprise revenue. The data also reflects only businesses using Ramp’s platform, which skews toward startups and mid-market companies rather than the largest Fortune 500 firms.

Neither Anthropic nor OpenAI immediately responded to requests for comment on the Ramp findings.
