Uber Taps OpenAI to Boost Driver Earnings, Speed Up Bookings
SAN FRANCISCO — Uber has integrated OpenAI’s artificial intelligence technology into its platform to help drivers optimize their earnings and enable riders to book trips more quickly, the companies announced.
The integration brings AI tools to the drivers and riders who use Uber daily across the United States and globally, according to the companies.
The integration is designed to address two sides of Uber’s marketplace simultaneously: helping drivers on the supply side make smarter decisions about when and where to drive in order to maximize their income, while streamlining the booking experience on the demand side to reduce friction for passengers, according to OpenAI.
Uber, headquartered in San Francisco, operates one of the largest gig economy platforms in the United States. The companies said the AI integration is intended to affect the work patterns and earnings of drivers alongside the booking experience for riders.
For OpenAI, the Uber deal adds another enterprise client to its growing roster of partnerships, extending its AI models into real-time logistics and marketplace optimization beyond chatbot applications.
The move comes as ride-hailing and delivery platforms invest in AI to improve operational efficiency and user experience, with competitors including Lyft and DoorDash also investing in machine learning and generative AI capabilities.
Specific OpenAI models deployed and the full rollout timeline were not detailed in the announcement.
