House Bipartisan AI Task Force Co-Chairs Head to Bay Area on Fact-Finding Trip

WASHINGTON — Reps. Ted Lieu, Valerie Foushee and Josh Gottheimer of the House Bipartisan AI Task Force traveled to California’s Bay Area this week on a fact-finding mission for federal AI policy, according to House.gov.

Lieu (D-Calif.), Foushee (D-N.C.) and Gottheimer (D-N.J.), all co-chairs of the task force, met with AI companies and researchers in the nation’s leading technology hub, according to the announcement.

The visit comes as Congress continues to weigh competing approaches to AI regulation, with lawmakers seeking firsthand exposure to the technology and its developers before crafting legislation. The Bay Area is home to many of the world’s most prominent AI laboratories, including OpenAI, Anthropic, Google DeepMind and Meta AI.

Fact-finding missions by congressional committees and task forces are a standard part of the legislative process, allowing members to gather technical expertise and industry perspectives that inform policy proposals. The House Bipartisan AI Task Force has been working to develop a comprehensive framework for federal AI governance.

Lieu represents a California district adjacent to the Bay Area tech corridor and has advocated for AI legislation in Congress. The task force includes members from both parties.

The trip’s findings are expected to contribute to the task force’s ongoing work on AI policy recommendations, which could shape legislation addressing issues ranging from AI safety and transparency to competition and national security implications of the technology.

No specific details about which companies or institutions the delegation visited were immediately available from the initial announcement.
