OpenAI Expands ChatGPT Ad Program to U.K., Brazil, Japan

SAN FRANCISCO — OpenAI is expanding its ChatGPT advertising program to the United Kingdom, Brazil and Japan, according to Digiday, as the company broadens its monetization strategy beyond subscriptions.

The expansion, described by the company as an effort to “expand thoughtfully,” is part of OpenAI’s plan to build an advertising business around its flagship AI chatbot, which has amassed hundreds of millions of users worldwide.

The move into three major international markets signals that OpenAI views advertising as a key revenue pillar alongside its consumer subscription tiers and enterprise licensing. The U.K., Brazil and Japan represent large, digitally mature markets with substantial advertising spending.

OpenAI first began testing ads in ChatGPT in the United States, and the international rollout follows the initial domestic test. The company has sought to diversify its revenue streams as it scales its computing infrastructure and pursues increasingly expensive AI research.

The advertising push places OpenAI in more direct competition with established digital advertising platforms operated by Google, Meta and Amazon, while also following a path similar to other AI-powered search and chat products that have begun integrating sponsored content.

For the broader AI industry, OpenAI’s advertising expansion could set a precedent for how consumer-facing AI products are monetized. As AI chatbots and assistants become more widely adopted, the integration of advertising into conversational AI interfaces raises questions about transparency, user experience and the potential influence of commercial interests on AI-generated responses.

The San Francisco-based company, which was valued at $300 billion in its most recent funding round, has been rapidly expanding its business operations as it transitions from a research lab to a full-scale technology company.
