SAN FRANCISCO — Google and OpenAI are competing to develop artificial intelligence agents that can shop autonomously for consumers, Fast Company reported, opening a new front in AI-powered commerce.

The emerging field, known as agentic commerce, envisions AI systems that can independently browse products, compare prices, and complete purchases with minimal human oversight — an evolution beyond today’s recommendation algorithms and chatbot assistants.

Both companies, headquartered in the United States, have been investing heavily in agent capabilities that could reshape how Americans shop online, according to Fast Company’s reporting. The race reflects a broader industry push toward agentic AI systems that can take actions in the real world, not just answer questions.

U.S. e-commerce sales exceeded $1.1 trillion in 2024, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. The integration of autonomous AI agents into the shopping experience could redirect portions of that spending through channels controlled by AI platform operators rather than traditional retailers.

For Google, which already dominates product search through Google Shopping, agentic commerce represents a natural extension of its existing advertising and commerce infrastructure.
