Anthropic’s Claude Moves to xAI’s Colossus Facility in Memphis
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Anthropic’s Claude AI is moving to the Colossus I supercomputer facility in Memphis, Tennessee, originally built by Elon Musk’s xAI, WREG-TV reported.
The move places Anthropic’s flagship AI model on computing infrastructure built by xAI, which constructed the Colossus facility in Memphis as one of the world’s largest AI training clusters. The supercomputer, which became operational in 2024, was designed to power xAI’s Grok models and has been described as one of the most powerful AI computing installations in the United States.
The San Francisco-based company has raised billions in funding from investors including Google and Amazon and has been scaling its Claude model family, with each successive generation requiring more computing power.
Memphis has become a hub for AI infrastructure, anchored by the Colossus facility. The data center’s location was selected in part for its access to affordable power from the Tennessee Valley Authority, a factor as AI training runs consume large amounts of electricity.
The infrastructure move comes amid a broader trend of AI companies seeking access to large-scale GPU clusters, which remain in short supply globally. Major labs including OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and Meta have also been working to secure compute capacity as they develop AI systems.
Access to a facility of Colossus’s scale could support the development of future Claude models, according to the WREG-TV report.
