Anthropic Strikes Deal With SpaceX, Raising Questions for Musk’s xAI

SAN FRANCISCO — Anthropic has entered into a deal with SpaceX, Elon Musk’s aerospace company, Barron’s reported Tuesday, creating what the outlet describes as a potential competitive problem for Musk’s artificial intelligence venture, xAI.

The partnership underscores the growing complexity of enterprise AI adoption and the sometimes conflicting business relationships among the industry’s biggest players. SpaceX’s decision to work with Anthropic — rather than exclusively with xAI, the AI startup founded and controlled by Musk — raises questions about enterprise demand for xAI’s products, according to Barron’s.

As the owner of xAI, which operates the Grok family of AI models, Musk has positioned his company as a competitor to Anthropic, OpenAI and Google in the race to build capable AI systems. SpaceX’s partnership with a direct rival raises questions about xAI’s enterprise competitiveness, according to Barron’s.

Anthropic, the San Francisco-based AI safety company behind the Claude family of models, has been expanding its enterprise footprint in 2026. The company, which counts Amazon as its largest investor, has sought to differentiate itself through a focus on safety, reliability and enterprise-grade deployments.

For xAI, which raised $6 billion in late 2024 and has been building out computing infrastructure, the SpaceX deal with Anthropic highlights a challenge for newer AI entrants: converting proximity to potential customers into actual enterprise contracts.

The deal also reflects a broader trend in enterprise AI procurement, where major corporations increasingly evaluate multiple AI providers rather than committing to a single vendor. SpaceX operates critical satellite internet and launch systems.

Neither Anthropic nor SpaceX immediately responded to requests for comment on the terms or scope of the arrangement.

The development comes as competition among leading U.S. AI companies — including OpenAI, Anthropic, Google DeepMind and xAI — intensifies across both consumer and enterprise markets.
